Many Meristem graduates start in a similar way. They learn one practical trade well, whether that is electrical installation, CCTV and satellite installation, appliance repair, networking or digital media production. Then they begin taking small jobs for family, neighbours and local shops.

Those first jobs matter. Each one builds confidence, a reputation and a list of happy customers who tell others. Word of mouth in a community can grow a one person service into a real business surprisingly quickly.

The steps that make the difference

Graduates who grow the fastest tend to take the same few steps:

  • They price their work properly. Charging for time, materials and transport keeps a business alive long enough to grow.
  • They keep simple records. Knowing what came in and what went out makes it possible to plan, save and invest.
  • They show their work. Photos of finished jobs, short videos and reviews on WhatsApp and social media bring in new customers.
  • They keep learning. Adding a related skill, such as solar installation for an electrician, means more jobs from the same customers.
  • They hire when the work is steady. The first hire is often an apprentice, which passes the skill on to someone else.
When one graduate hires one apprentice, a single place in a classroom becomes two livelihoods, and the skill keeps spreading.
